    Date-Based Archive My Not-Winning Pumpkin

I'll put up more pictures of pumkins later. Maybe I should do more Murakami food tributes.

Oh yeah, uh, HAPPY HALLOWEEN CHARLIE BROWN!

Date-Based Archive Pumpkin Update! Competition = Fierce

So here at work they're having the annual pumpkin carving contest. I carved, then painted, a pumpkin in a pretty good Murakami tribute (like those cookies I made). I thought, foolishly, I might stand a chance at winning a prize (the grand prize is a $50 gilft certificate to Tower Records).

But I am a fool! The competition is fierce! One of the P.A.'s carved a pumpkin that's eating other, smaller pumpkins! Alison carved a pumpkin to look like the KND treehouse! She stayed up all night! One guy used a mider (sp?) saw to carve a globe! One guy built enormous demon wings on his pumpkin and put dishes of free candy in front of it!

    Pictures are forthcoming.

Date-Based Archive What I really need is a reason to go into to space

…but not for me personally, rather, for the story I’m writing.

I need an economically feasible reason why people would travel into space and colonize parts of the solar system.

I wanted to say it’s some super-valuable alternative fuel source that solves Earth’s energy problems, or fresh water that can be shipped cheaply or something. But this is proving to be rather difficult.

Can someone please give me a reason to go into space?

    Date-Based Archive My Accidental Promotion

I swear I created an entry yesterday and it got deleted or something...

Yesterday I got to color something that will actually go on the air! A bottle of sunscreen lotion had to be re-colored, and I got to color it. I made two different versions and the director approved one. So for 4.5 seconds something I added to the show will actually be on television! Hooray!

Today some Cartoon Network people came through the office and the director accidently introduced me as a P.A. instead of an intern. Later I said I expected a raise, but he laughed it off.

Meanwhile, I finally got a check from the Employeress (to whom I am supposedly a personal assistant). But she never mailed the check, so when I went to her apartment to pick up something else, something which she called at the last minute to cancel, I got to pick up my freakin' $30 check. That's the lamest $30 I ever made.

Lately I've been trying to wrangle up something with a temp agency, with surprisingly more luck than the first time I temped. But when they call me at 11am for an assignment the same day, it's too late... Gah! This has happened twice now.

Date-Based Archive Yo-yoing to Fame and Fortune

So at my internship a certain WM has never really spoken to me, except on Tuesday, when he tripped over my chair, and said "Sorry." I am fairly certain he does not know my name, which much of the rest of the crew has memorized, despite my lowly intern status.

Ah! But today, today I decided to show David the PA some of my yo-yo tricks, and WM was in the color lab, and naturally a conversation started about yo-yos, in which WM seemed fascinated and amused. I think I came out of it not sounding too insane and making a good impression, but I was pretty nervous about the whole thing, since WM is kind of intimidating.

At the same time, I ought to be talking to WM a lot more, since he's the most accomplished person around. He has a couple of children's books published, as well as some comic(s) projects, and he used to write for Seaseme Street, and so on and so forth. That's who I had ought to be learning something from, but he's just not the most approachable person ever.

In general, I really, really need to improve my small talk skills. I can talk about yo-yos and anime and film well enough, but my coworkers like to talk about sports and politics, which I don't like to talk about at all.

Kerry's useful conversation hint is, "When people start talking about sports, I always ask them if eye-gouging is allowed. That tends to shut them up."

Date-Based Archive My list of recommended anime

Here's a handy chart to tell you what anime I recommend:

    Erin's List of Recommended Anime

Not on the list yet: Child's Toy, which I must own, SD Gundam, which you should run away from, and Zoids, which you ought to walk away from.

Date-Based Archive The Case for Trilogy Tuesday, or Why I Am Going to New Brunswick

The laymen among you may not have heard of Triology Tuesday, the Tuesday in Decemeber where some theaters are screening LOTR Fellowship & Two Towers in their extended editions, followed by Return of the King.

This is the single most important event for dorks in our time. It is as if all three original Star Wars were screening back-to-back on the eve of Return of the Jedi. I mean, let's face it, as soon as all three movies were out on DVD I was going to spend a Saturday watching them continuously - who among you was not going to do that?

So much the better to see them theatrically! I have not been watching LOTR on DVD for that very reason; I did not want to wear them out before the penultimate marathon.

Tickets were supposed to go on sale on Fandago at noon today. However, that did not happen for New York City - Fandango's system crashed, and it didn't matter, because all the tickets had sold out to people on line in person. Had I had my act together, I would have been at the theater (and only one theater in NYC is doing this) at around 5 or 6am.

But I didn't have my act together - I held out hope in the internet. And that, ladies and gentlemen, is why N. and I will be going to New Brunswick, New Jersey for Trilogy Tuesday.

    We're that dedicated.

Date-Based Archive Things I have learned from anime

A conversation at work this morning lead to the reading of one of Allison’s old blog entries. It turns out that one can learn important life lessons from watching anime. Here are a few of the lessons I have learned from watching anime:

    1. If your father or uncle has built a mech, you are the only person in the entire universe who can pilot it.
    2. The best way (the only way) to find true love is to transfer to another school.
    3. When running late for school, placing toast in one's mouth as one sprints is not a choking hazard, rather, it will help one go faster.
    4. If you have a crush on someone who turns out to be the same gender as you, (or indeed, they tend to change genders) this will not make you question your sexuality at all.
    5. A cat makes a good emergency food supply.
    6. A triangle is a stable geometric shape – so why aren’t love triangles stable?
    7. Never upset a student council if they settle disputes by fencing.
    8. Finding the dragonballs is a long a perilous journey, on which some of your companions will die – but no matter! You can use your one dragonball wish to bring them all back to life.
    9. If you want to be a pop idol, the best way to jump-start your career is to get help from two magical aliens who have the ability to age you by 6 years. (I have proof from three sources on this one - it must be true.)
    10. Some of the best girls are robots. Or angels. Or angel-robots.
    11. Finally, why do giant robots have arms? To hold giant swords.

    Date-Based Archive Kill Bill!

Kill Bill was super-good! Thanks to Hal and Adan, we all got free passes and watched a sneak preview screening. I can't wait until Kill Bill Volume 2 comes out!! I'm not going to say more, because I don't want to spoil anything.

I will say that it was quite violent, and my mom will probably cover her eyes for most of the film if she sees it.
