Date-Based Archive NYU So Expensive Students Sell Drugs to Attend / Sleep in Library

There have been two big stories in the news about NYU students:

NYU pot princess perky after bust

    and

NYU student sleeps for months in library basement

This can only mean one thing: In order to afford to live in NYU dorms, you pretty much have to be a drug dealer.

Not that we didn't already know that...

Also you'll note that CNN underestimates the cost of NYU tuition by about $6,000 to $8,000.

In other news, Maggie found this cute webpage about diseases:

Doctor Unheimlich has diagnosed me with
    Erinitis
    Cause:viral
Symptoms:excessive tentacle growth, black irises, levitation, extreme levitation
Cure:take four purple crystals before going to bed
Enter your name, for your own diagnosis:

Date-Based Archive The Birthday Loot Report

Thanks for everyone who came to my birthday party(ies)!!

I got lots of great loot from lots of people without ever having to ask for anything. Well, I did ask my parents for jive.

Don't feel bad if you didn't get me something, if you showed up to one of my parties, that's really excellent and all I expect from anyone.

    Meanwhile here's what I got:

    • Used Princess Bride DVD, and Lupin key chain figure - from ET, who I guilted into showing up
    • Nausicaa manga, vol. 3 - from Grace
    • Cake & Beer - courtesy of Tori. That was damn good cake. Also she brought cheese.
    • Subscription to NewType and check for money - from my parents (huzzah! NewType!!!)
    • Amazon Gift Certificate - from Ryan & Maggie
    • Dr. Who Book, hardcover - from Hal
    • Bottle of sake - from co-worker Mike
    • Kana-A-Day pad - from Tetsua
    • Portfolio for art stuff - from Kari
    • Bag of candy and light-up ring toy - from co-worker Chrysula (spelling unknown)
    • Drinks at the bar! - from Alison, Helen, Lisa, and I think Jeremiah
    • Blockbuster Gift Certificate - from Phil
    • David Boring graphic novel - from Eugene
    • Slifer the Sky Dragon Yu-Gi-Oh figure - co-worker David
    • Indiana Jones DVD Box Set - from my roommates (OMFG!!!1)
    • TBA - something from Dad
  • Fujico Action figure won in Japanese vending machine - from Jay
  • I hope I didn't forget something or someone on here. I also hope I am not guilting anyone unnecessarily with this list.

Perhaps I'll also mention the Dalek roly-kins figure Sam got me from Britain. That thing rules! I have to scan in the box.

Date-Based Archive Not Gay Enough For Tokyopop

So first of all, I have a cold. It's pretty gross. I started getting sick Friday afternoon, and it's been a snot festival since then.

Second, me and Alison did not win the Tokopop contest after all. I got word in the mail today.

I'm fairly pissed about it. I mean, we worked really hard and our entry looks really great. I've seen the crap they published in the other two Rising Stars volumes, and I can safely say that we obviously should have won.

But I probably shouldn't get too mad about it. After all, look at some of Tokyopop's titles. I mean, should I really be upset that our comic was not as gay as Demon Diary, or as generic as Girl Got Game, or as frickin' lame as Reality Check, or as god-awful bad as Zodiac Detective , or as mildly offensive as @Large?

Now that it won’t be published officially, if you haven’t seen our comic you can read it here: Mandy and the Space Pirate Spcae Vampire War, with backgrounds and script by me, and characters, inking and effects by Alison.

Thirdly, it’s too hot for April. 80 degrees? Maybe that’s why I’m sick.

Date-Based Archive 25 Years of Cookies Missed

So N. tells me last night that people traditionally give away free cookies on tax day. WHAT?!!? I've never heard of this! Never once have I gotten a free cookie on April 15th!! That's 25 years of free cookies I've been missing, since my birthday is next Wednesday.

    Fun Facts about my birthday:

    • Also Stella's birthday.
    • I share a birthday with Robert Smith (of the Cure), Iggy Pop, Tony Danza, Grand Canyon explorer Robert Powel, and Queen Elizabeth
    • The day before my birthday is Earth Day and Hitler's birthday.
    • My parents already got me something - a subscription to NewType USA magazine.
    • N. is making a contribution towards a new computer as a gift.
    • What I really want is a Hello Kitty Rice Maker. I figure there's nothing more Japanese than that.

Also my driver's license will expire, so I went to the DMV to get a new one. What a giant pain in the ass! This list of proofs of identity is complicated, and different, it seems, from the list they handed me at the office, and different still from what they actually accepted from me. To complicate matters I couldn't find my birth certificate (a certified copy) and my passport expired in 1998, so I had no real valid proof of my birth, but they ended up accepting my passport anyways.

And then the next day I happened to find my birth certificate by chance at the bottom of a giant box of crap I was sorting out. Also they took my old license, so now my expired passport and paper driver's license are my only proofs of ID until they mail me a new license in about a month.

Date-Based Archive This is your brain on anime

    In this entry, Maggie says:

"If you're really worried that you don't read enough books, you can try to swap some of anime-watching time for book-reading time."

That's kind of like telling an alcoholic that if they drank less, they could spend more time in the library. I guess its kind of dunting, since I average 2 minutes per page reading a book... it seems like I can watch anime a lot... faster.

To illustrate, I made these graphs of the corrosive effect anime has had on my brain over the years:

Date-Based Archive Charles Dickens / Seperating the Artist from the Art

Last night I watched Annie Hall with Alison, because she somehow made it through film school without having seen it.

Now, Woody Allen has made rather a lot of films, and some of them are very good. Some of them, like Annie Hall and Love and Death are some of my favorite movies, although I wouldn't go so far as to call myself a real Woody Allen fan, per say. It was interesting watching Annie Hall again, having lived in New York for several years now. When I first saw it, in 1997, living in Michigan, it seemed like the film was taking place in some alternate universe of Jewish people and intellectual snobs that was very different from the world I lived in. Now that I've been in New York for some time and hung out with intellectual snobs I better understood jokes like,

"I heard commentary and dissent merged to form dysentary."

Because I like the film so much, as well as other Woody Allen films, I am able, to a certain extent, to seperate the man from his art. I enjoy his films, even if I dissaprove of a lot of his... well... life choices.

Alison, and perhaps some of her friends (although not present, but said so later), perhaps, cannot make the separation. Alison blurted out several times, "He married his daughter! I can't believe he married his daughter!" I can't believe it either, but I can stop thinking about it for the two hours it takes to watch a film I enjoy. Plus Annie Hall took place before all the media scandal. Why did the media have to make such a big deal about it, anyway? It is horrible, and scandalous, and weird, but thanks to years of media hype, wonderful films are now less enjoyable.

And now for something completely different. All y'all's monthly book report has made me painfully aware that I can only read about 12 books per year, if that. That means, with a life expectancy of 76 years, 24 of which have already elapsed, I can only read 624 more books in my life.

Well, I was going to then demand that you choose which one of Charles Dicken's books I should read, but now that I look at the actual numbers, 624 is rather a lot of books.

Date-Based Archive Often Funnier than the original

Instead of writing a real blog entry I've been reading all of these Penny Arcade comics that were rewritten by a class of Japanese students. You can see the page with all of the comics here. I've uploaded some of my favorites:

Gabe just wants attention. (Original strip here.)

Reminds me of Adan. (Original strip here.)

Grammar Collective take note! (Original strip here.)

Problems with the homeless. (Original strip here.)

    I am a pen!

Reminicent of Kerry's time in Japan.

    Awesome.
